If your feed has been full of one smiling face from Kerala lately, here's who she is.
Mamitha Baiju, the actress behind Malayalam cinema's biggest hit, thanked director Girish A.D. at the success celebration for Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, the Times of India reported on Oct. 19. She said his faith came when she was not sure she could lead a film as its heroine, Moneycontrol reports.
"He believed in me"
Girish told her the story of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit right after the shoot of his film Super Sharanya wrapped, before that film was even released, she said. "Even today, I don't know what made Girish chettan say that to me or what gave him the confidence to trust me," she said, as quoted by the Times of India from the Reporter website.
"Whether it was 'Premalu' or 'Bethlehem', at a time when I didn't even believe I could play a main heroine's role like this, he believed in me. I am very grateful to him," she said.
Whether it was 'Premalu' or 'Bethlehem', at a time when I didn't even believe I could play a main heroine's role like this, he believed in me.
The film, starring Nivin Pauly and Mamitha, arrived in theatres on August 21, crossed ₹300 crore and is now streaming, the Times of India reports. The Hollywood Reporter India notes it was officially declared the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
Her career so far: from Kottayam to Premalu
Mamitha was born on June 22, 2001, and comes from Kidangoor in Kerala's Kottayam district, according to Wikipedia. She made her debut in Sarvopari Palakkaran (2017) and got her first prominent roles in 2021's Operation Java and Kho Kho, which won her the Kerala Film Critics Award for best supporting actress.
Then came Girish. She played Sona in his Super Sharanya (2022), and in 2024 she landed her first leading role as Reenu in his rom-com Premalu, her breakout, Wikipedia notes. She made her Tamil debut in Rebel the same year, then starred opposite Pradeep Ranganathan in Dude (2025), which THR India calls "the breakout hit nobody saw coming."
THR India credits her "likeably awkward charm" for making her part of "the movie fandom consciousness of the moment," and notes that reels from Premalu and Dude still pop up on feeds all the time.
A record-breaking 2026
This year has been huge. Jana Nayagan with Vijay, Vishwanath & Sons with Suriya and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit each grossed more than ₹200 crore worldwide, putting her on a list of Indian actresses with three such films in one year alongside Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, Cinema Express reports. All three hit theatres within about 25 days. She also starred with Dhanush in Kara.
The twist: the hit almost wasn't next
Here's the part fans may not know. Mamitha told THR India she heard the Bethlehem Kudumba Unit script "almost three years ago" and wanted to do it then, "but it wasn't happening at the time." When she signed Vishwanath & Sons, a different film was on the slate instead: Premalu 2.
"Later, while I was working on VaS, Premalu 2 was cancelled and BKU was planned instead!" she told THR India. So the record-breaking film exists because the Premalu sequel did not happen.
What's next for Mamitha Baiju
She has the Malayalam film Hello Dear, directed by Dinoj, with Sangeeth Prathap, and a Tamil film produced by Pradeep Ranganathan and directed by six filmmakers, in which she plays the lead, she told THR India. Cinema Express also lists Irandu Vaanam.
One more project is only a report for now. The Times of India, citing 123Telugu, reported that she may make her Telugu debut in Prasanth Varma's Jai Hanuman opposite Rishab Shetty. Neither Mamitha nor the makers have confirmed it, and Mathrubhumi English calls it unverified. We'll update this when there's official word.
