DC fans, the escape artist has finally been found, and so has his warrior wife.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn made it official on Monday, Oct. 19: Josh Hutcherson will voice Mister Miracle and Mackenzie Davis will voice Big Barda in Tom King's animated DCU series, Bleeding Cool reports. Gunn shared the news on X with a first image from the show.

Peep that art. We have stared at it for an embarrassing amount of time.

What we know about the show

The series is DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation's adaptation of the Mister Miracle comic by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, with Hutcherson as Scott Free, Bleeding Cool reports. Peter Safran, Gunn's fellow co-CEO, said he has seen animatics for all eight 30-minute episodes of the first season, that the team is targeting 2028 for a premiere and that more seasons may be possible, per Bleeding Cool.

King is the showrunner, and Safran told IGN that King wrote all eight episodes himself, TheWrap reports.

The twist: the secret slipped out early

Here's the fun part. Gunn's post was the official word, but it wasn't the first time we heard it. Safran "broke the news in an interview with IGN," TheWrap reports, and IGN posted the reveal on X on Oct. 15. Bleeding Cool says Safran spoiled the casting on the red carpet for Clayface.

IGN on X: "DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has revealed the upcoming Mister Miracle animated series will feature Josh Hutcherson in the titular role with Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda."

And it could go even bigger. TheWrap says it's unclear whether Hutcherson and Davis will play the roles in live action, but notes Gunn has said the DCU intends for performers in "primary castings" to cross over between animation and live action. "Scott and Barda would certainly fit the bill," TheWrap writes.

Why these two are perfect

King has said casting mattered hugely to him. "There were some people who nailed it," he said on The Brave and the Boys podcast, as quoted by Bleeding Cool. "I was like, 'Oh, my god! That is Scott.'" He added that he "wasn't going to settle for anything less than perfect."

TheWrap also points out a detail comic fans will love: Davis is taller than Hutcherson, and in the comics Barda is generally around a foot taller than Scott.

Meet Scott and Barda

Both characters were created by Jack Kirby in 1971's Mister Miracle #1 and #4, TheWrap notes. Scott Free is the son of Highfather, ruler of New Genesis, who gave Scott up to the evil Darkseid in exchange for Darkseid's son Orion to end a war. He grows up on Apokolips, rebels, and falls in love with Big Barda, a warrior from Darkseid's Female Furies. Together they become heroes on Earth, Mister Miracle a master escape artist and Barda a super-strong fighter, according to TheWrap.

When can we watch?

Not until 2028, if the target holds. Until then, we'll keep zooming in on that first image. For more superhero news, see Charlie Cox's message to Save Daredevil fans.
