Months behind bars, a trial that kept going wrong and one very nervous family in the corridor: Sarah Platt finally knows her fate.

Spoiler warning: this story covers the Monday, Oct. 19, episode of Coronation Street, which streamed early on ITVX before airing on ITV1.

In that episode, the jury found Sarah Platt, played by Tina O'Brien, not guilty of murdering Theo Silverton, Radio Times and Metro report. She's free to go home. But the biggest twist of the week has nothing to do with the jury.

How Sarah ended up on trial

In April, Sarah hit Theo, the man who abused Todd Grimshaw, over the head with scaffolding, and he fell to his death, Radio Times recaps. She called Gary Windass, who helped get rid of the weapon and kept quiet for months. Metro notes that Sarah ultimately couldn't let someone else go to prison for what she'd done. She was arrested and charged with murder.

A trial that kept going wrong

Sarah's case had a rough ride. DS Lisa Connor-Swain's statement unintentionally made things worse for her, while Theo's ex Danielle defended him, according to Metro. Todd, whose evidence was meant to show Sarah acted in self-defence, was so anxious on the stand that he stumbled over his words, Metro reports.

Then came Kit Green, Sarah's ex, who was finally swayed after Bethany pressured him to do the right thing. In Friday's episode, he delivered what Radio Times called "a shocking character assassination," painting Sarah as "unreliable, untrustworthy and unpredictable." He did say one thing in her favor: that she wasn't a murderer and had clearly acted in self-defence.

Sarah was so sure she'd be convicted that she asked her daughter, Bethany, to take custody of Sarah's young son Harry, Bethany's little brother, Radio Times reports.

The verdict

On Monday, the closing statements were delivered and the usher told the Platts a verdict had been reached. With Bethany, Todd, David Platt and Adam Barlow waiting anxiously, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, Radio Times reports. Sarah was overjoyed at the chance to go home to her son Harry.

Back in Weatherfield, Sarah turned straight to her relationship with Kit and asked for another chance. He told her it was too late, according to Metro, and Radio Times says he is about to move in with his mum, Bernie.

The twist: the witness who hurt Sarah is the father of Bethany's baby

Here's the secret that changes everything. While Sarah was behind bars, Kit slept with Bethany, and Bethany is now pregnant with his baby, Metro and Radio Times report. Kit hasn't told Sarah about the night with Bethany, and Bethany hasn't told either of them about the pregnancy, according to Metro.

So the man whose testimony did so much damage in court is about to become the father of Sarah's grandchild, and the only person who knows is Bethany. Radio Times reports that during the verdict, Bethany glanced across the courtroom at Kit, who still has no idea, and that she is now weighing what to do about the pregnancy.

As Radio Times puts it, "the secret will eventually be exposed - it's the nature of soap."
