Elaine, Selina, Christine, and now Polly. Julia Louis-Dreyfus just added a Broadway role to her legendary list, and the box office was ready for her.

The 11-time Emmy winner made her Broadway debut as Polly Wyeth in the revival of Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities, which opened Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Hudson Theatre in New York, Playbill reports. She stars alongside Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery and Lily Rabe in a limited engagement that runs through Jan. 17, 2027.

People calls it her "long-awaited Broadway debut," pointing to the TV icons she brought to life in Seinfeld, Veep and The New Adventures of Old Christine: Elaine Benes, Selina Meyer and Christine Campbell.

Meet Polly Wyeth

Polly is a wealthy, fiercely opinionated Palm Springs matriarch, People reports. The play is set at Christmas 2004, when Polly and her husband, Lyman (Ed Harris), are enjoying a comfortable retirement until their daughter Brooke (Rabe), a writer, comes home with a manuscript that threatens to upend their world.

According to Playbill, the story centers on a writer in a family with opposing political views who threatens to publish a tell-all memoir exposing a long-held family secret. People reports that Brooke's memoir is about a tragedy involving her older brother decades earlier, and her parents are desperate to keep the past buried.

Rounding out the family: Janney plays Polly's outspoken sister Silda, and Joe Keery plays Brooke's younger brother Trip, a TV producer who handles the household's chaos with humor, according to People.

An all-star family, with two Broadway debuts

The cast is stacked. Playbill notes that Janney is an Oscar winner and that Keery is best known for Stranger Things. And Julia isn't the only one stepping onto a Broadway stage for the first time: People reports that Keery is also making his Broadway debut.

John Benjamin Hickey directs. The play first premiered Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater in 2011 before transferring to Broadway the same year, and it was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, per Playbill. This is its first Broadway revival, People reports, with Lily Rabe stepping into the role of Brooke.

USNOW says the play's Palm Springs home was designed by scenic designer Scott Pask.

The twist: a box office smash before opening night

Here's the part that had Broadway buzzing before a single critic weighed in. Other Desert Cities started previews on Sept. 29, and its first seven previews brought in $1.88 million, "just barely not making The $2 Million Club," Playbill reported. Every one of those seven previews sold out, and the average ticket of $275.66 was the priciest on Broadway that week, according to Playbill.

That near miss didn't last long. In its first full week of previews, the week ending Oct. 11, the revival grossed $2,157,355.24 over eight previews at 100% capacity, according to Playbill's grosses page for the production. That's The $2 Million Club, before the show had even officially opened.

Playbill says the production "has already been one of Broadway's top grossers, making The $2 Million Club in its first full week of previews." After that first week, Playbill even suggested the play "may just be Broadway's next star-driven mega grosser."

How to see it

The revival is playing at the Hudson Theatre, 141 W. 44th St., through Jan. 17, 2027, per Playbill. It's a limited engagement, so if you've been dreaming of seeing Julia live on stage, don't sit on it.
