Young faces, familiar names
The film follows a young Haymitch Abernathy (Zada) as he competes as a tribute for District 12 in the 50th annual Hunger Games, per UPI. It also features younger versions of President Snow (Fiennes), Effie Trinket (Fanning), Plutarch Heavensbee (Jesse Plemons) and Caesar Flickerman (Kieran Culkin), UPI reports.
The older versions were previously played by Woody Harrelson (Haymitch), Donald Sutherland (Snow), Elizabeth Banks (Effie), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Plutarch) and Stanley Tucci (Caesar), UPI notes. Talk about big shoes!

The twist: this Effie believes in the Games
Here's what has us gasping. Fanning's Effie isn't the Effie we met in District 12, at least not yet.

"Effie in Sunrise on the Reaping is a fashion student trying to make her way in this world, but she's from the capitol and she's very much a believer in the Hunger Games," Fanning says in the featurette, per UPI. "She still has the confidence and the personality that makes Effie so iconic and lovable, but she has a fire under her belly to prove herself."
And Zada is setting us up for heartbreak. "At the beginning of the movie, I wanted [young Haymitch] to be very playful and loving and hopeful, so that when you get to where things take a turn it hits even harder," he says in the featurette, per UPI.
Fanning has been studying the originals, too. "Elizabeth and Woody, their dynamic is so fantastic," she says in a July featurette of Banks and Harrelson, adding, "Joe and I have tried to incorporate that," TheWrap reports.

Back to the Second Quarter Quell
The film revisits Panem 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, IGN reports. Billy Ray wrote the screenplay, based on Suzanne Collins' novel, and Francis Lawrence directs, per IGN. Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Lawrence produce.

IGN also lists Glenn Close, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak and Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the cast. TheWrap notes this is Lawrence's fifth Hunger Games film, after Catching Fire, both Mockingjay parts and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Background: how Zada feels about following Woody Harrelson
This isn't the first featurette to put the young cast front and center. Back in July, Lionsgate released a clip focused on Zada stepping into the role Harrelson made famous, TheWrap reported.
"[I'm] such a fan of his work. It's been intense being like Woody's Haymitch," Zada says in that featurette. "It's just so special to share that space with him."
"Being in this film, I mean, it's the most life-changing experience," he adds. "This story really hits home that your involvement, even as insignificant as you think it may be, has the power to change things over time."
Lawrence calls Harrelson's take a "very iconic portrayal of a character" in the same clip, and TheWrap notes the part is the first major big-screen role of the Australian actor's career. The story is based on Collins' 2025 novel and follows Haymitch through a Games with twice as many tributes as usual, per TheWrap.
