Paramount's Street Fighter opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office with $31 million, according to Deadline and Entertainment Weekly. Right behind it, Nathan Fielder's A24 documentary You Can See Everything pulled in a jaw-dropping $15 million.
Noah Centineo and the Street Fighter crew win round one
Street Fighter is the third feature-length take on Capcom's beloved fighting games, EW noted. Noah Centineo stars as Ken Masters alongside Andrew Koji as Ryu and Callina Liang as Chun-Li, according to Paramount's official cast list. EW highlighted the extra star power of Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Jason Momoa, and the film is directed by Kitao Sakurai, per Paramount.
The film added up to $51.1 million worldwide, EW reported, and played in 3,575 theaters in North America. Deadline said the opening was right where it was expected to be, with the audience leaning toward men over 35.
The fighters may not get to rest for long. EW pointed to two new releases next weekend that could knock Street Fighter off the top: DC's Clayface and Laika's animated film Wildwood.
The documentary nobody saw coming
The surprise of the weekend was You Can See Everything, which Fielder co-directed with Lance Oppenheim. Deadline described the three-hour film as following Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans in the run-up to her stay in federal prison.
EW reported that the film opened in just 855 theaters in the U.S., giving it a per-theater average of $17,544, roughly double Street Fighter's $8,671. It skipped an international release, EW said.
The numbers put it in rare company. Before the weekend finished, Deadline reported that its intel showed the film as the second-best documentary opening in 17 years, not counting concert films, behind only 2004's Fahrenheit 9/11 at $23.9 million. Deadline also noted it beat the $7.1 million debut of Amazon MGM's Melania, which had been called the best documentary opening in ten years.
Fans are obsessed
The buzz is as big as the box office. Deadline reported more than 2,000 sellouts over the weekend, with lines around the block at theaters in New York and Nashville. Its Letterboxd score of 4.8 is the highest ever recorded on the platform, according to Deadline.
Audiences skewed young, too. Deadline said 18- to 34-year-olds made up 62% of the crowd, and A24 reported that 70% of moviegoers were under 35. The film was shot over four years and cost less than $10 million, Deadline added, and A24 plans to go wider next weekend.
The rest of the top five
According to EW, Jessica Chastain's horror film Other Mommy fell about 70% in its second weekend to $8.35 million. Austin Abrams' undersea thriller Whalefall opened at No. 4 with $8 million, and Focus Features' Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, took No. 5 with $7.2 million.
Overall, Deadline estimated the weekend at about $107 million, up 58% from the same weekend a year ago.
A video game brawler and a deadpan documentary on top of the charts at the same time? That is a very fun October at the movies.
Hollywood was busy off screen this weekend too: catch up on Kendall Jenner and Jacob Elordi at the Academy Museum Gala.
