About Matt Selman
Matt Selman grew up in Watertown, Massachusetts, graduated from Beaver Country Day School in 1989 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, according to Wikipedia.
A Simpsons lifer
He joined the writing staff of The Simpsons in 1997 and has stayed ever since, rising to executive producer. He has written or co-written 31 episodes, including "Natural Born Kissers" (which Matt Groening named his eighth favorite episode in 2000), "Behind the Laughter," "Trilogy of Error," "Sky Police" and "The Food Wife." He also co-wrote The Simpsons Movie (2007) and the games Road Rage, Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game.
Awards and a famous email
He shares six Primetime Emmys with the show's producers, won an Annie Award in 1999 for "Simpsons Bible Stories" and a Writers Guild of America Award in 2004 for "The Dad Who Knew Too Little." That episode gave Homer the email chunkylover53@aol.com; Selman registered it, got thousands of messages and answered some as Homer until he forgot the password.
"We have a legacy of greatness, and you don't want to be the person that ruins The Simpsons," he has said of writing the show.
Bringing back Apu
As showrunner, he oversaw Apu's return in the October 2026 Halloween episode "The Revengening," with Sunil Malhotra as Apu's new voice. "We love this character, and wanted to bring him back in a smart, 'Simpsons'-y way that allowed him to evolve," he told Variety, adding that Apu and his family will be seen and heard more often.
