Cha Eun-woo was born Lee Dong-min on March 30, 1997, in Gunpo, South Korea, and has become one of the most recognizable faces of the Korean Wave, according to Wikipedia. His agency gave him his stage name, which combines the hanja for "silver" (Eun) and "excellence" (Woo).
As a child he dreamed of becoming a doctor, a prosecutor or a police officer. A talent scout spotted him at a school festival, and he signed with Fantagio in his first year of high school, training as an actor and an idol at the same time. He made his acting debut with a small role in the film My Brilliant Life (2014). He later graduated from Sungkyunkwan University, majoring in performing arts.
He debuted with the boy band ASTRO on February 23, 2016, with the EP Spring Up. On February 15, 2024, he released his solo EP Entity, led by the single "Stay." In April 2025 he contributed to a tribute song for his late bandmate Moonbin.
He broke out as a drama lead in Gangnam Beauty (2018), Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (2019) and True Beauty (2020-2021), which made him a star overseas. He has since starred in Island (2022-2023), A Good Day to Be a Dog (2023-2024) and the revenge thriller Wonderful World (2024), and he made his film lead debut in The First Ride (October 2025).
Forbes Korea named him its "CF Genius" in August 2025, and he was the top-ranked actor on its 2024 Power Celebrity 40 list, in 11th place. He has made the Forbes 30 Under 30 Korea (2023) and Asia (2025) lists and was the first male cover star of Harper's Bazaar Hong Kong.
